All 300 HSK 1 Words (HSK 3.0): List and Video

You look up an HSK 1 word list and one page says 150 words, another says 300, and an older HSK 3.0 chart says 500. That is an irritating way to begin learning Chinese. For the HSK 1 syllabus introduced for the 2026 exam, the number you need here is 300. This page gives you every word in one place, with Chinese characters, pinyin, and a short English meaning. There is also a full video lesson if you would rather hear the words than stare at a list.

Watch the complete HSK 1 vocabulary lesson

Our 70-minute lesson goes through all 300 words in the order shown below. Each word is spoken, shown on screen, and used in an example sentence. Keep this page open beside the video: when you hear something you want to revisit, the numbered list gives you a quick way back to its spelling and meaning.

You do not have to watch the whole thing in one sitting. Ten or fifteen minutes is enough for a first pass. Pause after a word, say it aloud before the second reading, and then see whether you can catch it in the sentence without looking at the English. If the pinyin still feels like a code, our pinyin chart and tone guide will make the written pronunciation much easier to follow.

Why do some HSK 1 lists have 150 or 500 words?

They are usually talking about different versions of HSK. The long-running six-level exam put 150 words at HSK 1. Materials made from that list are still everywhere, and plenty of them are useful for learning the basics. They just do not describe the full Level 1 vocabulary in the newer exam syllabus.

The official syllabus published in November 2025 and implemented in July 2026 lists 300 entries for HSK 1. You may also have seen 500 attached to early discussions of the broader HSK 3.0 grading standard. That figure belongs to an earlier framework, not the 300-entry Level 1 vocabulary list used for the current exam syllabus. When two websites disagree, check which publication date and document they are actually using.

That is a bigger first step than 150, but it is still a beginning. Knowing 300 isolated translations does not mean you can follow a fast conversation, and the exam is not a flashcard contest. The syllabus also describes ordinary tasks: introducing yourself, asking about time and places, buying food, talking about family and school, and handling simple daily exchanges. The point of the word list is to give those conversations something to run on.

The patterns hiding inside the 300 words

A list this long looks more manageable when you stop treating each line as a separate fact. Some words are useful alone; others are small parts that reappear in a whole family of expressions. Learning the connection is faster than memorizing five unrelated English labels.

Take 早 (zǎo, early). The list also gives you 早上 (zǎoshang, morning) and 早饭 (zǎofàn, breakfast). Or start with 书 (shū, book), then notice 书店 (shūdiàn, bookstore), 读书 (dúshū, to read a book), and 本 (běn), the measure word you need when you count books. These are not four separate corners of Chinese. They meet in a perfectly ordinary line such as 我买一本书 (Wǒ mǎi yì běn shū), “I’m buying a book.”

The question words make another useful cluster. 哪 (nǎ, which) grows into 哪个 (nǎge, which one), 哪里 (nǎlǐ, where), 哪儿 (nǎr, where), and 哪些 (nǎxiē, which ones). 这 (zhè, this) and 那 (nà, that) grow in a similar way. Once you hear those families, a question is less likely to sound like a blur of brand-new syllables.

Then there are the tiny words that change a whole sentence. 吗 (ma) turns a statement into a yes-or-no question: 你喜欢这个吗?(Nǐ xǐhuan zhège ma?), “Do you like this?” 吧 (ba) can soften a suggestion, as in 我们走吧 (Wǒmen zǒu ba), “Let’s go.” 了 (le) often signals that something is completed or has changed. It is useful, but it is not simply a Chinese past-tense ending. Learn these in short sentences, where you can hear what they do, rather than as bare dictionary definitions.

Numbers and measure words deserve the same attention. 二 (èr) names the number two, while 两 (liǎng) is what you normally use before a measure word when counting two things: 两个包子 (liǎng ge bāozi), two steamed buns. 个, 本, 件, 口, and 只 are all on this HSK 1 list. You will recognize their job much sooner if you meet them beside an object rather than in a row of abstract English glosses.

All 300 HSK 1 words, with pinyin and meanings

The index follows the syllabus order, which also matches the sequence of our video. The English meanings are deliberately short so you can scan the page; several words have more than one use, and their example sentences give a better sense of how they work. Pinyin shows the standard written tone marks. Speech will sound more fluid because tones change in connected words.

How to study the list without turning it into a chore

Working straight down from word 1 to word 300 is useful for checking coverage, but it is a poor way to make the words stick. The alphabetical order puts 爱, 八, and 爸爸 next to each other because of pinyin, not because those three belong in the same conversation. Give your brain a scene to hold onto instead: breakfast, a classroom, a phone call, a shopping trip.

Try making a small set of sentences with words you have just met. At breakfast, you might say 我喝牛奶 (Wǒ hē niúnǎi), “I drink milk,” and 我吃面包 (Wǒ chī miànbāo), “I eat bread.” The next day, swap in 水 (shuǐ, water), 包子 (bāozi, steamed bun), or 饺子 (jiǎozi, dumplings). One sentence pattern can carry several new words without asking you to rebuild your grammar from scratch each time.

  1. Hear a small batch

Watch 10 to 15 words from the lesson. Listen first, then repeat each word and its example aloud.

  2. Use the words together

Pick three or four from one everyday situation and make a sentence or a two-line exchange.

  3. Recall before checking

Hide the English meaning, look at the Chinese, and say what you remember. Then reverse the direction.

  4. Return tomorrow

Revisit yesterday’s words before adding new ones. Bring back the ones you missed a few days later.

Listening is part of that cycle, not an optional extra. A word can look familiar on a page and still vanish when a person says it at normal speed. Our Chinese listening practice plan shows how to move from careful replay to understanding a short passage without pausing every two seconds. If one syllable or tone keeps tripping you up, use the free sound chart to hear it on its own before returning to the sentence.

What comes after word 300?

There is no magic moment when the last item turns into fluent Chinese. A much more useful test is whether you can use these words without the list in front of you. Can you ask someone’s name, say where you are going, order something simple, and understand a slow answer? Can you hear 明天 (míngtiān, tomorrow) in a sentence without translating it one syllable at a time?

If some answers are still no, keep the video and this index nearby. Return to the words that fail in real use, not just the ones that look difficult on paper. When the everyday exchanges start to feel ordinary, you have done what HSK 1 vocabulary is meant to do: built a first working layer of Mandarin you can actually speak and hear.
